Tea drinkers across the UK are expected to flock to an exquisite new dining experience when a tea parlour and cakerie, RumpusCosy, opens in Plymouth as part of a new city centre arts hub, on Monday 9 June.

RumpusCosy is the brainchild of Eloise Malone, Director of dynamic arts organisation Effervescent. Located in the old Halifax Bank building in the hub of the city at Derrys Cross Roundabout, its mission is to bring an ‘experiential’ eatery to Devon.

Based on high glamour restaurant models such as The Ivy in London, and Sydney Tea Parlour in Australia, it will compliment the vibrant coffee house scene in the South West.

Offering 19 teas alongside unique sandwiches and scrumptious cakes, RumpusCosy promises an ethos of magical excitement, ritual, and subtle performance, with art and high fashion rolled into one. It will offer events such as High Teas, Japanese tea ceremonies and a lot more, as well as traditional cakes and lunches.

Blake Christison, Head Chef, said: “We know people are interested in the whole experience of going out to eat. So not only has the food got to be exceptionally high quality and good value, it also has to be an exciting and unique setting. Rumpus is the whole package; there is always something brewing, and it’s an experience people will talk about and want to share with their friends.

“We’ve been working around-the-clock for months to transform the space into a boutique style tea parlour. Now the stage is set for visitors to relax in our ‘snuggarium’, sink into retro furniture, and sip from vintage china.  I’ve been developing my menu which blends traditional favourites with vibrant choices such as watercress and orange butter sandwiches with orange dressing.”

Blake is an accomplished Head Chef, having previously worked at Café Rouge and River Cottage. His interests are in the sciences and arts of food, eating and excellent service.

The name ‘RumpusCosy’ was inspired by Stephen Fry’s name for his favourite room at home, (Stephen Fry is the man the Effervescent team most like to have as a dinner guest).

Eloise added: “’Rumpus’ is a great word which gives people the license to create a stir, be playful and make an impact, something Effervescent is all in favour of! ‘Cosy’ relates to the part of us which recognises we all need to be nurtured and snuggle-up somewhere; with friends or alone, or get our work done - and that hot cup of tea is just the thing to comfort us on challenging days”.

RumpusCosy throws open its doors to the public on the Monday 9 June.  It blends perfectly with the new Radiant Gallery, Effervescent’s ‘laboratory and showroom,’ which is due to launch this summer, and will show vibrant local, national and international contemporary artists and performers.

Follow @RumpusCosy on Twitter, and ‘Like’ and share the Rumpus Cosy Facebook page to be in with a chance of winning one of the first High Teas for two to be served, and be a part of Rumpus Cosy making history.
