In a world where Millennials are accused of ruining just about everything from breakfast cereal to handshakes, it should come as no surprise that religion has also succumbed to their disillusionment. The number of Americans aged 18-29 who have no affiliation to traditional religions has risen significantly, with just 28% of Millennials now attending weekly religious services, compared to 51% of their Silent generation counterparts. So, just what are they turning to instead?

Spiritual astrology

An enduring belief system that has been around for over 2,000 years, astrology continues to prove its relevance in modern society. Over the past 5 years, the stigma attached to astrology has faded away, replaced by a firm conviction that it is in fact the perfect antidote to the stress of everyday life. The rising popularity of the Zodiac has resulted in an increasing number of Millennials and Gen X turning to horoscopes for advice. This shifted attitude towards spiritual astrology is largely attributed to the ever-present search for purpose in life, however it is often viewed by cynics as an excuse for certain personality traits, for example claiming your disorganisation is down to you being a Pisces. Ultimately, astrology seems to offer younger generations an accessible belief system that comes without the constraints of more traditional religions.

Clairvoyance

Freedom from the monotonous 9 to 5 is an aspiration of many, with the majority of companies now offering flexible working hours due to increasing demand. This need for adaptability lends itself to alternative spiritual beliefs such as clairvoyance which provides a parallel meaning to life, beyond the known human senses. Clairvoyant readings offer an escape from reality - a world beyond what is in front of us, presenting Millennials with a solution for achieving the ideal work-life balance. Referenced throughout history, clairvoyance has been documented by religions and scholars alike, although due to its associations with witchcraft, many of the first seers were forced to keep quiet. Even with notable psychics in the media such as Theresa Caputo and John Edwards, clairvoyance is still viewed with scepticism by many. That said, Millennials continue to diffuse the mistrust surrounding clairvoyance, reinforcing it as a legitimate spiritual alternative.

Tarot readings

In a similar vein, tarot readings have also taken off in recent years with people seeking guidance and direction more than ever before. It is amidst these times of uncertainty that younger generations feel drawn to alternate beliefs, dabbling in the paranormal. Tarot readings allow participants to tap into their imagination and find guidance on almost any situation, whether it be general life advice or answers to a specific question. Despite the tarot being around for centuries, it continues to prove its importance as topics such as finding love, or dealing with illness, remain top concerns for most people. It may come as a surprise to some, but tarot readings can also be used to define personalities, allowing you to delve deeper into your own character and gain insight into how to kick toxic habits.

In the context of current world events, the rise in spiritualism is perhaps less mysterious that it first appears. As the anxieties and unease that come with modern society do not seem to be disappearing any time soon, it is unlikely that this surge in spiritual beliefs is a passing fad.  There will always be a fascination with the unknown, a curiosity that sparks people’s imaginations in the search for answers to life’s biggest questions.
