Remembrance Day in Plymouth

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Fox, and Lady Mayoress will be joined by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, Deputy Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor’s Consort, Leader and Chief Executive of Plymouth City Council at this year's Remembrance Day Service on Plymouth Hoe.

The service will remember all those who lost their lives in both World Wars and in all conflicts.

A two-minute silence will take place at the Royal Naval Memorial at 11am.

The Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon will lay a wreath on behalf of the County of Devon followed by The Lord Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Plymouth, followed by the Naval Base Commander and other representatives of the armed forces. 

A member of HMS Heroes (a support group of service family children from across the city) will also lay a wreath, followed by pupils from Torbridge High, Leigham Primary, Lipson Vale Primary and Laira Green Primary.

The Bishop of Exeter, Rt Rev Robert Atwell will conduct the service, which will last for around 20 minutes.

Members of the public and local organisations will be invited to pay their respects and lay their personal wreaths at the end of the service, on the north side of the memorial, following the departure of the civic dignitaries.

The processional party will then take their places at the Civilian Memorial in Lockyer Street, where the Bishop of Exeter will say a prayer followed by the City Laureate who will read a poem.  Wreaths will be laid around the civilian memorial by the Lord Mayor, the Naval Base Commander (on behalf of the Services), and Alison Seabeck MP (on behalf of all the local Members of Parliament) followed by civilian representatives.

Members of the public are reminded that parking around the Hoe is limited. Some spaces will be available on the promenade for blue badge holders but this will be on a first come, first served basis.

Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Mike Fox, said: “Remembrance Day is always a very important date in Plymouth’s civic calendar and this year is even more poignant as it marks a number of significant anniversaries.

“As well as being the centenary year of the start of the First World War, 2014 marks the 90th anniversary of the unveiling of the Royal Naval Memorial, and the 60th anniversary of extensions to the Royal Naval Memorial.

“This year also marks the 65th anniversary of the return of HMS Amethyst to Plymouth after making an epic escape from being under siege on the River Yangtze.”
