Public Sewer Services renews contract with Exeter-based Lightfoot having saved over £58k in fuel bills, and 102 tonnes of CO2 in the last 12 months

Leading sewer and drainage installation, renovation, repair and maintenance company, Public Sewer Services, has renewed its contract with Exeter-based Lightfoot having succeeded in slashing vehicle idling, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions across its fleet of 132 vehicles.

Providing real-time, in-cab coaching, and rewards for better driving, Lightfoot has delivered almost £58,000 of savings on fuel to Public Sewer Services in the year to December 2022, whilst reducing CO2 by 102 tonnes. In trials Lightfoot was shown to improve mpg by 15.5%, at the same time as reducing vehicle idling by 29%. Lightfoot also helped to cut fleet emissions by more than 15%.

Operating a fleet of vehicles ranging from Vauxhall Corsa vans to 32 tonne grab trucks, Public Sewer Services is now on target to cut its fleet carbon footprint by more than 510 tonnes over the next five years; equivalent to the amount of CO2 produced by boiling 12.9 million kettles of water.

Commenting on the Lightfoot contract renewal, John Moran, Transport and Training Manager for Public Sewer Services, said: “As a business, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. Lightfoot delivers significant fuel savings and carbon reductions through the adoption of a driver first approach. It engages with our drivers in real time, delivering ‘in-the-moment’ coaching, modifying driving styles for the better, and preventing more costly styles of driving. That reduces harsh acceleration, braking and cornering, resulting in lower emissions, less fuel use, reduced vehicle wear and tear, and fewer road incidents.

“Combined with Lightfoot’s smartphone reward app and driver leagues, we’ve seen a dramatic positive uplift in driver engagement with over 80% of our drivers actively participating. You might say it’s training by stealth, but it really works, and the prizes are a great incentive.

“This, combined with other measures, has contributed towards big drops in accidents and incidents involving our vehicles, which has fallen from one incident or accident once every 34,000 miles in 2017, to one every 79,000 miles today.”

Thanks to Lightfoot’s prize draws, including the Drivers’ Lottery, Public Sewer Services staff are now actively looking to self-moderate their driving style so that they can gain access to a host of great prizes. Those that achieve ‘Elite Drivers’ status are able to enter draws where they can win up to £100 each week.

Paul Hollick, Managing Director of Lightfoot, commented: “Public Sewer Services has a clear commitment to reducing its impact on the environment. It is also dedicated to enhancing the safety of its staff. Only recently, the business achieved the Gold Standard for its emissions reductions, and it has also received rewards from its insurer in recognition of its lower levels of accidents and vehicle incidents.

“We’re proud to continue to be a part of their journey. It all goes to show that driver-focused, in-cab coaching and rewards deliver win-win outcomes for drivers, the environment, insurers and fleet operators. Together, we’re helping to cut fuel usage, and emissions, saving the planet one mile at a time.”
