Dartmoor National Park Authority is urging visitors to help prevent wildfires as hot, dry conditions continue. Lighting fires is illegal, and people are being asked to leave barbecues at home to protect habitats and wildlife.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in fire incidents and damage caused by barbecues, prompting the reminder to follow leave-no-trace principles. These simple steps play a vital role in keeping Dartmoor safe for both people and nature.

Key advice includes:

  • Follow byelaws and never light fires.

  • Avoid using disposable or portable barbecues.

  • Take all litter home, especially glass bottles, which can start fires when left in sunlight.

  • Pay attention to all warning signs and advisory notices.

Ella Briens, Deputy Head Ranger, said: “It’s really important that everyone does their bit to look after Dartmoor and not damage the place they’ve come to enjoy. Lighting fires is not permitted and we’re asking people to leave their barbecues at home while the fire risk is high. Rubbish, especially glass, should be taken home as it can easily start a blaze. When a fire gets out of control, it puts lives, property and nature at risk and places huge pressure on emergency services.”

Figures from the National Fire Chiefs Council show that wildfire incidents in England and Wales have already exceeded 500 this year. Many are caused deliberately or through careless behaviour.

The public is urged to remain alert and report any suspicious, reckless, or irresponsible actions to the Police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In emergencies, always call 999.
