Police confirm second death in coach crash

Two people are dead and 12 injured after a major coach crash in Cornwall.

The crash occurred at around 1pm this afternoon (13 May) when the vehicle crashed into a hedge on the A387 at Morval near Looe.

The coach from Carmel Coaches, which operates throughout Devon, was thought to be carrying passengers from Exmouth aged 60 and over at the time of the crash.

The coach was travelling towards Looe from the direction of Plymouth when the incident occurred.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that one person has died and declared the crash a major incident.

At around 4.10pm police confrimed a second passenger had died as a result of thier injuries.

Police have also confirmed the driver of the coach, a 57 year-old man from Exeter, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken into police custody at Launceston.

Three air ambulances, two from Devon and one from Cornwall, were sent to the incident along with numerous front line ambulances, Patient Transport Vehicles, Doctors and Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs).

South West Ambulance Foundation Trust (SWASFT) report that 13 people have been injured in the incident including eight people with severe injuries who have been transported to Derriford Hospital.

A further four have been described as walking wounded and have recieved treatment at the scene.

Initial reports put the number of wounded far higher but SWASFT have now confirmed the number at 12.

Police say that the coach contained around 40 passengers.

Fire and ambulance crews were also called to the scene.

There is no information on the age of number of passengers, or the status of casualties at this time but the road has been closed and is expected to remain so for some time.
