Police celebrate Plymouth Armed Forces Day

Police in Plymouth will be celebrating the contribution of the city’s servicemen and women at Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.

Officers and staff are taking part in this year’s event being held on the Hoe between 9.30am and 11pm to honour military personnel past and present.

The neighbourhood team from Charles Cross police station will be hosting a police stand on the Hoe and are inviting the public to meet them to discuss any community concerns.

Neighbourhood officers, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables, and Plymouth-based Police Cadets will be on hand to offer support and advice on a range of policing and crime prevention matters.

There will be various activities for children and the public are being given the chance to look around a range of police vehicles and artifacts from policing past.

Sergeant Chris May, neighbourhood team leader, said: “We are pleased to support Plymouth Armed Forces Day once again – it is a fantastic event and gives us the chance to show our gratitude for our servicemen and women.

“The event also provides an excellent opportunity for the public to come and talk to their local officers about any policing matter or issue of concern they may have. We are hoping to meet as many people as we can so I would encourage the public to come over and say hello.”

Devon and Cornwall Police will be joined at their stand by the Royal Navy Police and additional officers will be out on patrol providing a high-visibility presence for the event.

Chief Superintendent Andy Boulting, commander of Plymouth Police, will join veterans and serving military personnel for the RAF and Allied Air Force Memorial Service from 9.30am.

He will lay a wreath on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police to recognise fallen men and women who have laid down their lives in service of their country.

He said: “It is a real privilege and honour to take part in Plymouth Armed Forces Day to celebrate and recognise the invaluable contribution and sacrifice made by service personnel, both past and present.

“The day is particularly significant for Plymouth whose heritage is deeply rooted in military, particularly naval traditions. Today Plymouth continues to be home to a large population of veterans and serving military personnel and their families, and this is key to shaping the city’s identity.

“I am very much looking forward to the celebrations and hope the public will do the city proud by turning out in force to mark this special day. This is a real chance for us all to salute our forces for the work that they do.”
