Police appeal for witnesses after man found seriously injured in Plymouth

Police are investigating a serious incident in Plymouth after a man was found critically injured in the street in the early hours of Tuesday 9 June.

Emergency services were called to Wingfield Way in Stoke around 2.25am and found the man unconscious having sustained several injuries, including a serious head injury.

The man, in his 40s and from Plymouth, was treated by paramedics and taken to Derriford Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Officers located a blood trail and enquiries led to outside an address in Melbourne Street in Stoke where it is believed the man sustained his injuries.

Two men, aged 67 and 52, both from Plymouth, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and were taken into custody at Charles Cross police station.

A short time later there were concerns for the health of the 52-year-old man and he was taken by ambulance to Derriford Hospital where he remains.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances around how the man found in the street sustained his injuries and detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Chief Superintendent Paul Davies, Devon police commander, said: “The Force’s Major Crime Investigation Team has begun an investigation into this incident and this will continue. The enquiry is at an early stage and we are currently trying to ascertain how the man sustained his injuries before being found in the street.

“This is a serious incident and we would urge anyone with information to contact us.

“We believe that members of the public may have seen him making his way from the location where we suspect he received his injuries to Wingfield Way where he was found by a member of the public.

“We are also co-operating fully with the IPCC regarding this matter.”
