BBC Children in Need has awarded £30,000 in new funding to a local group working with disadvantaged children and young people in Plymouth. This grant forms part of the charity’s small grants programme and bring the total invested in Plymouth to more than £414,000.

Plymouth Vineyard has been awarded a three-year grant of £30,000 to continue their existing work benefitting nearly 500 local children and families affected by high levels of deprivation.

The funding supports a drop-in service where vulnerable families can access a range of support to help meet their needs. Over the next three years, funding will enable the group to extend their hours of operation, which means that families can continue to come together in a relaxed and non-judgemental environment.   The project currently provides fun activities for children such as arts, crafts and free play with others their age, whilst their parents benefit from advice on additional and vital services in the area.

Arthur Goode, Chairman of Plymouth Vineyard, commented on the award, saying: “The children and families we support are incredibly vulnerable, suffering severe financial hardship with little or nothing for their basic living needs. However, we are there to help, and offer much needed support and guidance to families at a time when they really do need it most.  A huge thank you to BBC Children in Need!”

BBC Children in Need's Chief Executive, Simon Antrobus added: “We’re delighted to be able to award these grants, thanks to the generosity of the British public. This funding will help to support disadvantaged children and young people right across the UK, giving them the chance to overcome the challenges in their lives and to reach their full potential.”

BBC Children in Need awards grants at seven points during the year and funds two types of grants, both of which are open to new or existing applicants. A Main Grants Programme is for grants over £10,000 per year to support projects for up to three years. Meanwhile, BBC Children in Need’s Small Grants Programme supports projects for up to three years, and includes grants up to and including £10,000 per year. Both of these programmes are currently open to applications.

Alongside the main and small grants programmes, BBC Children in Need are continuing to develop Curiosity - a partnership with Wellcome - which awards grants to organisations using inspiring science activities to create change for disadvantaged children and young people. 32 organisations have already been funded by the Curiosity programme and more information will be available this summer about further funding opportunities.
