Hidden in Plain Sight, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

The term ‘abstract’ can mean many things – to remove, to summarise, to be difficult to understand, to be impersonal – all of which can apply to abstraction in art. It can refer to art that has an object or landscape as its subject or starting point, or it can use forms that have no source from the visible world. This exhibition will focus on abstraction from our collection, including work by Patrick Heron, Ian Davenport, and Justin Knowles. It will also include previously unseen footage of Patrick Heron in his studio from the late 1950s.

Artists Make Faces, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

Artists Make Faces is the vision of Monika Kinley OBE, a pioneering curator who moved to the Plymouth area in 2005 and who was recognised in the 2012 New Year’s Honours List for her services to the arts.

The exhibition is a realisation of a long-held idea of Monika’s to create a show of works where artists have taken the face and used it as a canvas to explore different themes, rather than just producing standard portraits. It will feature a distinctive and personal selection of works from public art galleries and collections including Arts Council England, Tate and the Whitworth Art Gallery. Some of the works that will be on display have not previously toured

Artists Make Faces will include works by famous names such as LS Lowry, Frank Auerbach, Gilbert and George, Eduardo Paolozzi and Lucien Freud.

It will also feature works by 'outsider artists' such as Sava Sekulic, Albert Louden and Richard Nie - artists who do not belong to a specific movement or school but who are no less significant than their mainstream counterparts - and who Monika has championed throughout her career.

Bob and Roberta Smith, Plymouth Arts Centre

Bob and Roberta Smith is recognised for his trademark, text-based paintings. These colourful signs are hand painted onto scraps of wood and roughly nailed together. The shapes and misshapes of letters are as important as the message they spell out. These fields of colour ask questions, make statements and instigate debate. Letters swim before your eyes as you attempt to decipher a text, which could be an announcement of an event or provocative call for action. Bob and Roberta Smith’s work explores the relationship between humour, politics and society and questions established values and authorities. Many works take the form of succinct witty slogans whilst others, such as the Browne Report and Letter to Michael Gove, are longer diatribes that expose a frustration with political decision-making. The messages almost always advocate for creativity, culture and freedom.

These paintings use the visual language of folk and punk; the use of drop shadow text and a mixture of different fonts and letter sizes evoke the aesthetics of protest and are reminiscent of makeshift public notices and temporary shop signs from an era before the computer.

The process of producing these musings on art, politics and culture seems to be a cathartic one for Bob and Roberta Smith, which is perhaps why the artist advises ‘Make Your Own Damn Art’.

Plymouth Porcelain: A New Collection

Established British ceramic artist, Clare Twomey has created a brand new installation inspired by our Plymouth Porcelain collection.

Plymouth Porcelain: A New Collection can be viewed above the doors of our China Connection gallery and will remain on display indefinitely. The artwork features 33 suspended cases containing white porcelain objects that have been cast from objects suggested by the people of Plymouth.

Objects were suggested for various reasons - in celebration of friends or family or because of related emotions and memories. Against the back drop of the Museum's historic Plymouth Porcelain collection, the commission looks to the future by capturing the stories of people today.

This is the first time that Twomey, who has exhibited in the UK, Europe and America and who was the ceramic artist-in-residence at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2011, has created a permanent work for a Museum.

Plymouth Porcelain: A New Collection has been made possible thanks to New Expressions 2, which is supported by MLA Renaissance South West and the National Lottery through Grants for the Arts to enable regional museums to commission new work and join forces with contemporary artists.

Go West, Hue and Cry, The Christians in Concert, Plymouth Pavilions

Go West, Hue and Cry* and special guests The Christians are united on the same bill for the first time ever.

With millions of albums sales and iconic hits such as We Close Our Eyes, Call Me, King Of Wishful Thinking, Labour Of Love, Looking For Linda, Violently, Ideal World, Forgotten Town and Harvest For The World plus over twenty five years of perfecting their craft, performing to audiences at sold out stadiums, intimate unplugged sets and everything in between, this authentic eighties triple header is not to be missed.
