Thousands of people took to the streets of Plymouth on their bikes this weekend as Sky Ride landed on The Hoe for its third consecutive year.

Cheers were heard as people set off on the ride, which was opened by Plymouth’s Special Olympians gold and bronze medallists, Elizabeth Haywood and Steven Dodd.

The free event hosted by Plymouth City Council, British Cycling and Sky allowed riders of all ages and abilities to ride the 6.5km route at their own pace, stopping off at well-known landmarks on the way.

Starting at the Hoe, the circular route travelled along the waterfront, West Hoe, Millbay, Stonehouse and the Royal William Yard.

Participants were treated to a whole host of activities and entertainment throughout the day with unicycle workshops and displayed, BMX stunt shows, Go-Ride sprint sessions and bike basic workshops.

British Cycling Recreation Manager Brian Johnston said: “Another fantastic event with a real buzz in the air all day. It’s really great to see so many families having a fun day out, that doesn’t cost anything. For those that have the cycling bug, or want to give it a try keep an eye out for the Sky Ride Local programme where you can join group-led rides every week.”

Councillor Mark Coker added: “So many people look forward to this event and it’s great to see everyone having so much fun. I would like to thank all the staff involved in making this happen, and our partners British Cycling and Sky. Without them we wouldn’t be able to host a cycling event on this scale.”
