Oddfellows District Meeting Celebrates Unity, Progress and a Promising Year Ahead
The Plymouth and Truro District of the Oddfellows Friendly Society has marked another milestone with a highly successful Annual Summoned Meeting, its equivalent of an Annual General Meeting, highlighting a year of progress, stability and growing community engagement.
Members travelled from across Cornwall and Plymouth to Plympton to attend, beginning the day in a welcoming atmosphere with refreshments and conversation before turning to the business of the meeting.
Proceedings were opened and chaired by the well regarded Provincial Grand Master, Tina, beginning with the traditional singing of the time honoured Oddfellows Ode. A moment of reflection followed as attendees observed a one minute silence in remembrance of members who had passed away.
Guided by Tina, the meeting progressed through a comprehensive agenda.
Reports confirmed that the District’s finances, recently subjected to professional audit, remain in excellent order. Trustees delivered updates and confirmed District Officers for the coming year.
A detailed welfare report also underscored the Society’s continued commitment to supporting members through both practical assistance and financial aid.
Further discussions highlighted the various friendship, lunch and yoga groups, ceremonial activities, charitable grant opportunities, support for attendance at regional and national conferences, seasonal assistance initiatives and plans to expand the Society’s reach through the friendship and dining groups across the District.
Following a break for a traditional pasty lunch, the meeting resumed with the ceremonial installation of new District Officers. Tina formally handed over her role to Mike, formerly Deputy, who now assumes the position of Provincial Grand Master. Tony was appointed Provincial Deputy Grand Master while Tina continues to lend her experience as Immediate Past Provincial Grand Master, ensuring continuity and stability in leadership.
The formal proceedings concluded with expressions of gratitude and the traditional closing ode, accompanied by a keyboard performance.
Reflecting on the day, Mike said: “Today has been a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with shared purpose and goodwill.
"Our discussions were both constructive and harmonious and I am excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to strive to strengthen and expand our presence across the District.”
Peter, the Provincial Corresponding Secretary, added: “It is both inspiring and humbling to witness the dedication shown by our members and friends.
"Their commitment is the lifeblood of our Society and occasions like this reaffirm the Oddfellows as not only an organisation but a truly supportive and enduring community.”
