New split-level landing stage opens
Watersports enthusiasts at the Grand Western Canal are set to benefit from a new split-level landing stage, now open near Holbrook Bridge in Sampford Peverell. Constructed by the Canal Ranger Service, the platform offers two levels: one at towpath height for powered boats and a lower deck specifically designed for easier access for canoeists, kayakers, and paddleboarders.
The new structure replaces a previous stage built in the mid-2000s, which had become unfit for use. Minnows Touring Park generously contributed over £500 towards the cost of materials.
Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity, praised the upgrade: “The Canal Rangers are committed to improving facilities for visitors. This new landing stage is already proving popular and supports healthy, outdoor activities.”
Councillor Les Cruwys, Chair of the Grand Western Canal Joint Advisory Committee, noted the partnership’s mutual benefit: “It’s a great example of how collaboration with local businesses can enhance public amenities.”
Simon Clist, County Councillor for Wiland and Uffculme, said the new design addresses the previous structure’s height issue: “This split-level approach has already worked well further up the canal.”
Julie Evans, owner of Minnows Touring Park, added: “With the growing popularity of paddle sports, it made perfect sense to support this project. Customers are thrilled with the easy access and beautiful surroundings.”
During construction, Rangers discovered a vertical bank and used a protective material called Nicospan to reinforce it. The removed decking boards will also be reused by local schoolchildren to build bird boxes, promoting sustainability and wildlife support along the canal.
The project highlights the ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the Grand Western Canal for visitors and the community alike.
