New solar panels support greener future for East Devon Business Centre

New solar panels have been installed at East Devon Business Centre, supporting East Devon District Council’s work to decarbonise its estate while adding to the centre’s appeal as a base for local businesses.

The system is now operational and is expected to save around seven tonnes of carbon each year, contributing to the council’s wider aim of reducing the environmental impact of its estate.

This investment is also forecast to pay for itself within four to five years, supporting the long term financial resilience of the building.

Three East Devon businesses were invited to tender for the work, giving local firms the opportunity to compete to deliver the project. The result of the tender was that Flex Eco Services were chosen to complete the work.

The panels also add to the centre’s offer for current and prospective tenants, particularly businesses looking for workspace that can support their own journey towards net zero.

Councillor Paul Hayward, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Assets and Economy, said:

“Installing solar panels at East Devon Business Centre is a clear example of the practical action we are taking to decarbonise our estate.”

“The centre already provides a strong offer for businesses, and this project is a visible sign of our continued investment in the building. We want more businesses to discover the flexible workspace and facilities available here in Honiton.”

Councillor Richard Jefferies, Portfolio Holder for Environment – Nature and Climate, said:

“Our environmental goals should be reflected in the everyday decisions we make about council-owned buildings. Projects like this show how existing public assets can be used more responsibly, while supporting the transition to locally generated clean energy.”

The installation forms part of the council’s continued investment in the centre, helping to support its future as a flexible base for businesses.

Interest in East Devon Business Centre has increased recently, and offices remain available for businesses looking for a flexible base. The centre offers easy-in, easy-out serviced offices with inclusive rents and free parking, alongside conference and training facilities.
