Alison Seabeck, MP for Plymouth Moor View, invited schools to help her raise awareness about the importance of insects and other pollinators, in support of the Buglife campaign to preserve and protect wildlife habitats.

She had asked the children to send their best bug poems, photos and drawings. The deadline for the competition was 16th May.

Ms Seabeck said: “The response has been absolutely overwhelming. We had over 220 submissions. It was almost impossible to choose the winners because truthfully all the children are winners, having displayed their artistic and poetic talents, plus a real concern for the environment!

“I am so grateful to the schools, their staff and most of all the pupils for taking part in the competition. It has been an immensely delightful experience for me and my staff.

“I am also really pleased that Plymouth City Council have linked up with Buglife to help create more wildflower meadows under the “Plymouths Buzzing” scheme. There is a really worrying decline in pollinators. One out of three mouthfuls of food depend on pollination, that’s food for thought.”

The competition winners are:

Connor, Riverside Primary School
CJ, Mayflower Academy
Zak, Cann Bridge School
Alfie, Shakespeare Community School
Gary, Woodfield Primary School
Aimee, Eggbuckland Vale Primary School
Isaac, Victoria Road Primary School
Maisie, Thornbury Primary School
