More drug dens closed in Plymouth

Two more properties have been closed because of drugs and anti-social behaviour following successful applications by Plymouth City Council.

Plymouth Magistrates granted a closure order on 14a Duke Street because the court was satisfied, following evidence from police and local residents, that Mark Lewis had engaged in criminal behaviour and that the use of the premises had resulted in serious nuisance being caused to members of the public, much of which was attributable to groups of people attending the property, shouting, swearing and taking drugs. The property is subject to a three month closure order and Lewis was ordered to pay £200  court costs.

Magistrates also granted a closure order on 12b Duke Street because the court was satisfied by evidence and photographs that there was anti-social behaviour and drug use by Shane Beasley on the premises. The property is subject to an eight week closure order and Beasley was ordered to pay £100 court costs.

Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities for Plymouth City Council, said: “The court’s decision to grant these two closure orders at Duke Street sends out a strong message that anti-social behaviour and drugs will not be tolerated in Plymouth. I would like to thank Sanctuary Housing and Devon and Cornwall Police for their support as it shows what can happen when everyone works together.

“I would particularly like to say a special thank you to the local residents, who have shown great courage in coming forward to give evidence about the anti-social behaviour they have been experiencing. We are pleased to be able to work together with people in the local community to respond to their concerns in this way.”
