Man assaulted with glass bottle in Plymouth bar

Two men are in Police custody after a 33-year-old man was assaulted with a glass bottle at a Plymouth bar.

The incident took place at the Cuba bar in Mutley at around 1.40am on Friday 26 July.

The victim attempted to intervene when a fight broke out inside the bar and was then hit with the bottle, sustaining a cut to the back of the head.

Two men aged 24 and 21 years have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in custody at Crownhill Police Station.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police on 101, quoting reference EC/13/7169.

The incident follows the announcement by local police earlier this week of a crackdown on violence involving glass bottles in the city.

Devon and Cornwall Police have vowed to ban glasses and glass bottles in troublesome night spots following a spate of similar late night 'glassings'.

Speaking about the announcement, Chief Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith, who is responsible for policing in the city centre, explained: “In the past year there have been 29 separate ‘glassings’ in the city centre at 20 different venues. As such, I have met with many of the local licensees and we are working together to reduce violence.

“Any premises that experiences more than one incident in a year may well face a ban on glass in their venue. There are plenty of alternatives available, including safety glass, plastic or aluminium. In accordance with this policy, we have recently commenced legal proceedings against a Plymouth bar in an attempt to ban glass at their premises."

Police have not named the bar in question at this stage.

Chief Inspector Drummond continued: “We are following in the footsteps of many other towns such as Cardiff and Newquay”.

A similar ban in Newquay, Cornwall, saw a drop in serious violence by 80%.
