A major programme to repair some of the most severely damaged roads in Plymouth is continuing throughout August.

The five-month programme, which began last month, is resurfacing whole roads and large sections of road that suffered the worst damage after the prolonged wet weather last winter.

As well as resurfacing, the works include structural reconstruction to the worst affected areas and are being carried out alongside the Council’s day-to-day road maintenance programme.

Amey, the Council’s highways contractor, resurfaced 14,815 square metres of road in July and August’s programme will see a total of 26,324 square metres of resurfacing over 10 roads, including roads that have suffered multiple pothole damage.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We’ve made road repairs a major priority in Plymouth, despite being up against significant cuts to our highways funding. We can’t resurface every road but we’re doing all we can to repair as many problem areas as possible.

“During July, works were carried out in Stoke, Devonport, Plympton and Plymstock and local councillors have been out to see at first hand the vast improvement this has made to badly affected roads in their areas. Residents will be seeing further major improvements to Plymouth’s roads in August and the coming months.”

Local residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance by letter and, where road closures are required, diversion routes will be signed. Access to properties will be maintained when and where possible.
