Five dedicated bus drivers from Torbay, Torquay, and Exeter have completed the gruelling Devon Heli Hike, raising an impressive £765.73 for Devon Air Ambulance — a life-saving charity that relies entirely on donations.

The team, made up of Brooke Taylor-Smith (Torquay), Ryan Burnitt, Mark Clifford, Karl Runciman (all Torbay), and Scott McMillan (Exeter), took on the South West Coast Path challenge after Mark spotted an event poster. With support from Health and Wellbeing Champion Brooke, the group signed up to raise funds for the vital service.

Held in Plymouth, the Heli Hike offered two tough coastal routes:

  • 14 miles with nearly 1,900 feet of elevation — completed by Brooke, Ryan, and Scott.

  • 26 miles and over 3,400 feet of climbs — tackled by Mark and Karl.

The terrain tested even the most experienced walkers with steep hills, narrow trails, and river crossings. Despite the physical demands, the group pushed through to complete their routes, motivated by the stunning sea views and the cause they were supporting.

Donations poured in via online fundraising, depot sponsorships in Torquay and Paignton, and generous contributions from friends, family, colleagues, and Torbay Operations Manager Jay Clark.

“We all felt such a sense of achievement at the finish,” said Brooke. “It was tough, but knowing we were helping such a vital service made it worth every step.”

The team crossed the line proudly, collecting medals and certificates together. Their contribution helps keep Devon Air Ambulance flying, providing critical emergency care across the county.
