Visitors  to The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge are invited to help staff and volunteers record the diverse natural flora and fauna that live alongside the resident donkeys at the charity’s 50th Anniversary BioBlitz.

Held over the weekend of 29 - 30 June, the BioBlitz is just one of many events that celebrate the golden anniversary of the international animal welfare charity. It’s the perfect way to explore the delightful sanctuary near Plymouth and meet some of the 17 resident donkeys.

A whole host of fun family hands-on activities are included across the BioBlitz weekend including bug box building, activity sheets, colouring and a trail around the Sanctuary.

The donkeys who live at the Ivybridge Sanctuary help to play a vital part in attracting insects and invertebrates by the dung they produce, which in turn bring in birds and other mammals.

With expert partners on hand to help identify species, visitors will be able to identifying as many animals and plants as possible, then record their findings on a spotter sheet. All information collected will be shared with the Head of Conservation at the charity’s international headquarters in Sidmouth.

Refreshments will be available throughout with the centre’s cook serving up some delicious treats.

The Donkey Sanctuary’s 50th anniversary is an opportunity to both look back on the charity’s landmark achievements and take stock of the massive challenges in a world where the suffering of animals remains abhorrent.

Since its foundation by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen in 1969, The Donkey Sanctuary has grown from a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse, to an international welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for a living.

The BioBlitz is a free to attend event. The bug box building will held on a first come first served basis. The event runs between 10am and 3pm over the weekend of 29 – 30 June. For more details, please contact the Ivybridge centre on: 01752 690200
