Barratt and David Wilson Homes is continuing its positive work to support local employment, by creating new roles to develop talent in the construction industry in Plymouth.

The leading housebuilder aims to recruit five new bricklaying apprentices to work across its developments in the region, which include its Redwood Heights development in Plymouth.

It will also look to recruit a Technical Advanced Apprentice and a Commercial Advanced Apprentice who will have roles based at head office.

The vacancies come ahead of the twelfth annual National Apprenticeship Week, running from March 4th-8th, which celebrates the benefits of apprenticeships for individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The introduction of the National Apprenticeship Levy in April of 2017 has helped to promote the idea that apprenticeships provide an alternative route to traditional education. The full cost of training and assessment will be funded from the Barratt and David Wilson Levy contributions.

Tim Davies, division construction director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes in the region, said: “The construction industry is continuing to grow and this is an exciting time for anyone with an interest in housebuilding to join a market leading company.

“As one of the country’s top developers we are absolutely committed to developing raw talent and I believe that we have a duty to provide these kinds of apprenticeship opportunities.”

The new apprentices, who start in the summer, will be based on a housing development site in the region and will learn from experienced tradespeople.

They will also spend time at a local college or skills centre on an intensively delivered qualification in their chosen field.

Barney Munn, who is currently studying a marketing apprenticeship with Barratt Homes in the region, said: “The main thing that made me choose an apprenticeship over going to university was the opportunity to gain experience. The experience I can gain within full-time work in my chosen field is invaluable. In addition, I can start earning as well as gain a qualification at the end of my contract – it’s excellent!”

All programmes are well structured and tailored to individual needs. Apprentices will receive encouragement, support and guidance to help them develop, giving the skills and qualifications for a successful career.
