Patients, staff and members of the public will get the chance to vote for their favourite piece of art at a forthcoming exhibition at Derriford Hospital.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Vinci and Devon Art Pop launched the ‘The Vinci Staff Art Prize’ last month. In total, 26 entries were received, which have now been shortlisted down to a final 12 to be exhibited at Derriford Hospital on Friday 3 October 2014.

The competition was open to Trust staff and our colleagues from the Military of Defence Hospital Unit, Serco and Vinci, with two awards up for grabs, the Vinci Art Prize and the Vinci People’s Choice Prize.

The competition was initiated by Nick Thomas, Director of Planning and Site Services,  Jill Griffin, Healthy Bones Consultant and founder of Devon Art Pop and Di Brimacombe, Project Support Manager and keen artist, with the intention of promoting the hidden talents of our staff and providing some interesting artwork to fill the hospital corridors.

Jill said: “Devon Art Pop are particularly pleased to be supporting the Vinci art prize for staff here at the Trust, as we know that there are many staff members who are budding and experienced artists.
“The benefits of the arts on health and wellbeing have been widely reported and the wonderful range of works that have been shortlisted by our group of professional artists and Trust staff is testament to the enthusiasm for the project.”

The final 12 entries that have been shortlisted are:

• Trevor Hadfield (IM&T) – “Bowerman’s Nose”
• Julie Hawke (Serco) – “Antigua”
• Claire Henle (Operational Support) – “The Herd”
• Mel Shandrick (Occupational Therapy) – “Boats”
• Trudie Headford (Operational Support) – “Sunflower Garden”
• Lester Jones (Mustard Tree Volunteer) – “Bike at Sunset”
• Adam Hiley (X-Ray) – “Study 3”

• Monika Marszalek (Serco) – “The Door”
• Hannah Craddock (Pharmacy) – “Neighbourhood Watch”
• Hannah West (Theatres) – “Inside Out”
• Sandra Smolarek (Serco) –  “Just Keep Smiling”

The shortlisted artwork will be exhibited outside of the restaurant on level 7 at Derriford Hospital. The exhibition will start at 11.00am and both prize winners will be revealed by the panel at 4.30pm. It is open to both staff and members of the public and both winners will receive a prize and have their art displayed at the hospital for a year.

Staff can make their artwork available for sale on the day, with 10% commission being donated to Plymouth Hospitals Charity.
