Half term full of fun at Museum and Art Gallery

There’s a host of half term holiday fun on offer at the City Museum and Art Gallery next week.

‘Pick Up and Go’ activities inspired by the natural history collections will be available all day on Saturday 28 and Tuesday 31 May and Friday 3 and Saturday 4 June.

Saturday 28 May is a busy day, with a chance to look closely at pickled creatures, peer at hundreds of pinned insects and make your own mini-beast. The ‘Natural History Curators’ event is free with no need to book and you can drop in for as little or as long as you like between 10.30am and 12pm and from 2pm to 3.30pm.

You can also meet a re-enactor dressed as a World War I nurse at selected times throughout the day, hear her stories as she goes ‘back on duty’ and see historical objects.

On Wednesday 1 June there‘s a chance to make paper ‘Ruffs and Cuffs’ inspired by the days of Shakespeare and Drake. This drop-in event is also free with no need to book. It runs from 10.30am to 1pm (last entries at 12.30pm) and activities will be organised on a first come, first served basis.

On Thursday 2 June you can work with guest artist Rachel Griffin to make a museum in a box using arts and crafts materials plus any small items you want to take in from home.

Two workshops will run from 10.15am to 12.15pm and 2pm to 4pm. There is a small charge of £2.50 per child and advance booking is advised via the Museum Welcome Desk or by calling 01752 304774. Accompanying adults go free.

To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare the Museum and Art Gallery has been running a short series of films based on some of his most famous plays. Half term will round off with a free screening of ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ at 1.30pm on Saturday 4 June. Admission is free but people are again advised to book in advance as spaces are limited.
