Young people will get a taste of building work in North Prospect as part of a Council roadshow to encourage them into the construction industry.

A marquee is going up today (14 August) at the North Prospect Fun Day which is taking place at Titchy Park.

There’s a chance to learn how to build a wall at the event as well as get on-the-spot guidance about where and how they can get the skills they need to get great jobs in construction.

The marquee is at the event as part of a targeted campaign to talk directly to young people in their own neighbourhood about what they can achieve.

More dates are being planned for Honicknowle and Ernesettle during August and during the last week of August there will be a stall in the city centre. On Sunday 28 September it will be making an appearance at Stonehouse Street Festival.

The roadshow includes taster sessions for young people to have a go at plumbing, plastering, decorating or carpentry along with the chance to talk to apprentices and advisors on what the steps are to get on the road to work.

The roadshows are designed to increase awareness of opportunities in construction ahead of the full launch of Plymouth Building, a Council-led partnership with the local building industry that aims to provide a steady stream of qualified motivated employees as well as give local people new opportunities to get skilled and move into great careers. More details will be available in a few weeks’ time.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “We are expecting a lot of building work here in Plymouth over the next decade and we want to do all we can to make sure that young Plymouth people are employed on the sites and in the offices.

“Construction has changed enormously over the last few years and there are some incredible careers in areas that did not exist before. Positions that look at the environmental sustainability of buildings, technicians as well as electricians, bricklayers are now up for grabs. Now is the time to look at construction as a career avenue, see what qualifications you need and talk to the right people about what to do next.”

As well as being heading out to housing estates across the city, a marquee highlighting construction opportunities will be at some of the popular events that attract thousands of people. Pop along on:

  • Friday 15 to Sunday 17 August – in the piazza for Flavourfest
  • Monday 25 to Sunday 31 August City Centre – a marquee on the piazza

There is more in the pipeline also including a ‘meet the employer’ event to bring young people together with actual companies offering apprenticeships in building.
