A Tea Dance with a Twist on the Hoe and a Dementia Friendly Shopping morning at Drake Circus are just two of the events taking place during this year’s National Dementia Action Week (20 – 26 May).

This year’s theme is inclusion. Over a third of people living with dementia, have reported to the Alzheimer’s Society that they have felt lonely recently and over a third have lost touch with their friends following a diagnosis.

Organisations such as Plymouth City Council, Drake Circus, Moments Café and Hub, Plymouth Citybus etc are taking part in events throughout the week to raise awareness of dementia and to encourage individuals and organisations to take action that will make everyday life better for people affected by dementia.

Ian Sheriff said: “As the chair and founder of the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance, I am delighted to see the amount of activities for people with dementia and their carers during Dementia Action Week. I would also like to say a big well done to the Dementia Friendly City Coordinator for all her hard work and energy with this.”

Claire Puckey, Dementia Friendly City Coordinator for Plymouth City Council, said: “There are loads of great events taking place this year in Plymouth so if you want to know more about Dementia and how you can help make the city more Dementia Friendly then please do get involved.”

All events are free unless otherwise stated.
