Five escape blaze in block of flats

Five people had a lucky escape when a fire broke out in a block of flats in Clittaford View, Southway this morning.

Three fire crews from Crownhill and Camels Head initially attended, but on arrival the officer in charge requested a further appliance from Greenbank along with the incident command unit and support pump as the property was well alight. Crews also requested the aerial ladder platform from Torquay.

Five people were in the block of flats at the time of the fire, and all have been accounted for.

A spokesman for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said the kitchen, hallway and loft space of the second floor flat was severely damaged by fire and the remainder of the flat was severely damaged by heat and smoke.
