The Plymouth Voluntary Group (PVG) of Diabetes UK (DUK) and the Plymouth Motorcycle Club have kindly donated £3,000 to the Children’s Diabetic Fund, which has enabled the Diabetic Children's Nursing Team to purchase a much wanted piece of analytical equipment.

After raising £1,600 at the Plymouth Megaride, the Plymouth Motorcycle Club decided to donate the money to Diabetes UK. This was donated, at the suggestion of the PVG, to a trust fund set up to support the work of the Diabetic Children's Nursing Team, which directly benefits the local children who suffer from diabetes.

The PVG also raised money for the trust fund, which enabled the purchase of a blood sugar analysis machine, which allows patients to have immediate relevant treatment for their condition, rather than having to wait several days for the results of lab tests.

Maria Wheeler, Children's Diabetes Health Care Assistant Derriford Hospital, said: “The machine is a point of care analyser, which is designed to give simple and fast testing to improve diabetes management in young patients. This machine is extremely useful for us to have and we have been trying to get one for some time.

“The Plymouth Motorcycle Club gave us £1,600.00 last October from their Megaride, which raised a large amount of money and we were invited to a presentation, where they presented us with the cheque. I was amazed at how much money they had raised and how many good causes they give to. I never realised the hard work and dedication of this group.

“Our local Plymouth Voluntary Group gave us the rest of the funds, which allowed us to have enough funds to purchase this fantastic piece of equipment.

“Myself and the children’s diabetes team would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that was involved in raising the money, we as a team are extremely grateful.”

The PVG also funds the supply of information packs for newly diagnosed children and continues to support the Derriford team with the help of generous donors such as the Plymouth Motorcycle Club and the Megaride participants.
