The state of our planet is becoming a growing concern, however, we, as humans, can all do our bit to lower our carbon footprint and preserve our surroundings for future generations. Unfortunately, the climate crisis isn’t about to go away any time soon. It’s here to stay, so it’s up to us to make a few small changes in our lifestyle to support environmental causes.

With that being said, the adjustments you make don’t have to be drastic and you can start to implement more and more into your lifestyle as time goes on.

If you wish to make a difference to the environment, here are five ways to lower your carbon footprint:

Join a climate support group

If you have an inner passion to save the environment, why not join a climate support group? The more we alert others of what’s happening to the world and encourage our government to take action, the more likely your voice will be heard.

Reduce your waste

It’s essential you pay close attention to the amount of waste you’re producing. Every single product you buy will come in some form of packaging and potentially end up in landfill, so it’s up to you to dispose of it responsibly.

Most importantly, make sure you limit the amount of plastic you buy, as it can seriously harm our wildlife and takes approximately 1,000 years to decompose. It’s your duty to recycle any materials that can be re-used by disposing of them in the correct bins and perhaps even upcycling some of your old items rather than buying from new.

Reducing your waste is more than just the products we purchase, it’s the food we eat too. Approximately a third of all food manufactured is discarded. Aim to eat any remnants from your meal preparation and use up any spare ingredients in the back of your cupboards. If there’s any food you can’t eat or has gone past its sell-by date, use this organic waste for your garden.

Make a donation

Climate change is severely affecting wildlife across the world; therefore, donations are greatly needed so projects can be managed by conservationists to help animals survive. There are many ways you can support this particular cause - from adopting an animal to setting up a fundraiser; whether it be on JustGiving or as a birthday fundraiser on Facebook.

Get an environmentally-friendly job

Why not turn your passion for the environment into a career? If you live and breathe the idea of making a difference, it only makes sense for you to find a job that also lowers your carbon footprint. The pollution emitted by road transport is one of the biggest concerns in London. As a result, companies such as Green Tomato Cars are just one of a number of transportation services offering jobs for taxi drivers with the draw of driving low and zero-emission vehicles to combat issues pollution and air quality concerns in the capital city.

Travel responsibly

As mentioned, much pollution is caused by vehicle emissions, so think conscientiously about how you get around day-to-day. If you work in close proximity to your home, make the pledge to walk or cycle to the office. If you live a little further out, set up a car-share scheme with your friends or hop onto public transport rather than driving your car.
