A Dignified Commemoration of Esteemed Oddfellows Member from Plymouth

In a poignant and time-honoured gathering at Redruth’s historic Oddfellows Hall, the Riviera Provincial Lodge of Past Grands gathered to pay tribute to two beloved and long-serving members of the Plymouth and Truro District Lodge, Sisters Jean La Roche of Plymouth and Mavis Voisey of Redruth.

Both women were deeply revered within the local district, having devoted many years to the service of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.

They each held significant leadership roles within the society, where their quiet, yet unwavering commitment left a lasting impression on all who knew them.

Jean and Mavis were not just members, they were pillars of the community, embodying the values of the Oddfellows in every aspect of their lives.

The Riviera Provincial Lodge of Past Grands, established in 1933, is dedicated not only to overseeing the higher degrees of the society but also to ensuring the dignified remembrance of those who have passed. Such memorials are a vital part of the Lodge’s traditions, honouring the legacies of members through reflection, respect, and fellowship.

The memorial service unfolded in an atmosphere of solemn reverence, with subdued lighting casting a quiet glow over the gathering.

Tributes to Sisters La Roche and Voisey were delivered with warmth, dignity, and heartfelt gratitude, as those present reflected on the profound impact these women had on the Lodge and its members.

One newer member, visibly moved by the occasion, described it as “elegant and dignified,” capturing the essence of the tribute perfectly.

After the service, members eligible by virtue of their office and service convened at the Penventon Hotel in Redruth for a thoughtful luncheon. A toast was raised in honour of Jean and Mavis, cherished friends, devoted Oddfellows, and exemplary figures within the District.

A particularly moving moment came during the Oddfellows funeral oration, delivered by Provincial Corresponding Secretary Peter English at Plymouth’s Park Crematorium.

In a deeply symbolic gesture, at a later meeting of the Oddfellows in St. Budeaux, Plymouth, Jean’s chair remained poignantly empty, with her certificate of appointment as Past Provincial Grand Master placed on the seat and her ceremonial sash draped across it.
