Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust has marked World Radiography Day, by recognising the work of its specialist imaging staff.

World Radiography Day is celebrated on 8 November each year. The date marks the anniversary of the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

Dr Phil Hughes, Medical Director and Consultant Radiologist, said: “The radiology department at Derriford Hospital has grown significantly over the last 20 years and is the largest radiology departments in the south west of England and possibly one of the largest departments in the UK. It has more than 30 consultants, all with specialist interests, and more than 200 other staff, including radiographers and specialist nurses.

“The department supports many of the specialist services provided by the Trust and has a national and international reputation for teaching and innovation. We are currently one of only three Radiology Academies in England, where registrars are trained. The department also has a rapidly growing research interest directed by Professor Carl Roobottom, Consultant Radiologist.”

Last year, Plymouth Hospitals became only the seventh diagnostic imaging service provider in the UK to be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to the Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) Standard. The accreditation covers diagnostic imaging services that are delivered across all Trust sites.
