A celebration of Chinese culture will begin on the evening of 17 February as Plymouth University hosts an authentic dinner and free networking event on its city centre campus.

The 300-capacity Rolle Marquee will host both public events to herald in the year of the sheep. The annual event has been celebrated at the University for the past five years and offers a variety of entertainment including fortune telling, fire and pot juggling and aerial hoopists.

Attendees of the free networking event, taking place from 6-9pm on Tuesday 17th February will be welcomed with free food and drink, and have an opportunity to build business connections while developing their knowledge of doing business within China. Entertainment and workshops will accompany speeches from entrepreneurs about working internationally.

Tickets for the New Year celebration dinner from 7-10.30pm on Thursday 19th February include a free drink on entry, traditional Chinese buffet dinner and breath-taking performances to make it an evening to remember. They are available from £12.50 from the University’s eStore and bookings of 10 will be offered at a 10% discount.

Richard Parkman, Lecturer in Leadership and Events Management at Plymouth University said: “It’s important to mark the cultural diversity of our city through occasions such as the Chinese New Year. Our students and staff have embraced it enthusiastically and it’s a fantastic opportunity for the city to come together and celebrate.”

Qian Chen, the President of the University’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association, added: “Chinese New Year is a day where families gather around for the annual reunion dinner. For many of our students, it is when they miss home the most, so we try to make the events on campus a real celebration where they can enjoy themselves as they would at home.”
