A special party was held at Derriford Hospital yesterday to say a massive ‘thank you’ to the many dedicated volunteers who provide their services to Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, all year round.

More than 80 volunteers came along to the annual event, which was also attended by the Lord Mayor Cllr Michael Fox and the Lady Mayoress Mrs Rosemary Fox.

Elizabeth Pollard, Volunteer Co-ordinator for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, who organised the party, said: “I am delighted we are able to host a Thank You lunch for the volunteers, they make such a positive difference to patients and this lunch is a small token of thanks and appreciation for the time they give.

“They really enhance the services provided to patients, in so many areas of the hospital, it is lovely to be able to say ‘thank you’ in this way.”

Bev Cox, Deputy Director of Nursing who attended the lunchtime event, added: “It was a privilege to be able to meet so many of our wonderful volunteers today. There was such a vibrant atmosphere in the room and it was amazing to see the range of ages and abilities amongst our volunteers.

“We are so lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers at the Trust; they really do provide a vital contribution and they help to improve the experience for our patients and staff.”

There are currently approximately 600 volunteers in the Trust. This includes those:

  • Working as a hospital guide, clinic volunteer, ward visitor, chaplaincy volunteer or patient survey volunteer.
  • Volunteering at Hospital Radio or providing a trolley service for the RVS Recreational Library
  • Helping with children in the Activity Centre,
  • Volunteering with the League of Friends
  • Volunteering in the Cancer Support Centre or at the Royal Eye Infirmary Tea Bar
  • Acting as peer supporters in the Maternity and Renal Units
