Castle Drogo celebrates 50th anniversary summer
Castle Drogo in Devon is celebrating a landmark 50 years since it first opened to the public under the care of the National Trust. To mark the occasion, the iconic castle has planned a series of 1970s-themed summer events, blending nostalgia and fun for visitors of all ages.
The celebrations kicked off with a flower festival that welcomed a crowd of excited visitors on the castle grounds. Fifty years later, the atmosphere remains just as lively, and this summer, Castle Drogo is pulling out all the stops to make the milestone memorable.
One of the standout attractions is the Disco Room, open daily from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM until 7 September. The Undercroft Exhibition space has been transformed into a groovy 1970s-inspired disco complete with sparkling disco balls, vibrant lights, and an upbeat soundtrack of classic 70s hits. Visitors are invited to join in the fun, with an open invitation to dress up and dance to the music. It’s the perfect way to feel the spirit of the era.
For families looking for more playful fun, the Summer of Play event is on daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM until 7 September. This event focuses on the popular games and toys of the 1970s, such as space hopper races, Swingball, and the iconic board games like Dominoes and Mastermind. Spanning seven play zones across the castle grounds, this is an exciting chance to embrace the nostalgia of the 70s while getting active or enjoying some laid-back fun. Sponsored by Starling Bank, this event is free with normal admission.
Additionally, Castle Drogo is offering a Behind the Scenes Roof Tour on 22 August, which allows visitors to explore the hidden top corridors and southern roof of the castle. The tour includes breathtaking views of Dartmoor, weather permitting. Tickets for this tour are £5 per person and must be purchased on the day from the visitor centre.
The Hydro Open Day on 17 August will offer a fascinating look at the hydro turbine building on the River Teign. Learn about the history and restoration of this important building and how it has powered the castle since 1929.
