Residents at Butterfly Lodge in Plymouth celebrated Burn’s Night with a busy programme of activities that brought a glow to the home despite the miserable weather.

Deputy manager Sarah McCaffrey said: “We started the day watching a documentary about Scotland as a bit of escapism and all loved seeing the beautiful scenery.

“Then we held a Robert Burns quiz: our ladies and gents always love taking part in a quiz, and they enjoyed telling us about past quizzes they’d taken part in, as well as holidays to Scotland.

“My colleague Fizz – who came to work in a fabulous ‘Get Yer Kilt Oot’ T-shirt - then read us some of Robert Burn’s famous poems.

“She recited the well-known ‘A Red, Red Rose’ and ‘To a Mouse’, among others, and did a terrific job with the pronunciation.

“The highlight of the day was probably the arrival of Dave the Lone Piper who entertained us with a great rendition on his pipes, and also did us the honour of reciting ‘Address to a Haggis’ over our haggis that was prepared for lunch.

“One of our residents told me she was so happy that Burn’s Night falls at the end of January, because she thinks it’s the perfect time to snuggle down indoors and Burn’s Night is a great excuse for some light-hearted revelry.”

Butterfly Lodge is an award-winning dementia care home in St Budeaux run by specialist care providers Camelot Care. The group has recently opened another home in Devon, Deer Park Nursing Home in Holsworthy, and operates three further homes in Somerset.
