Plymouth has been ranked the eleventh happiest place to live in Britain based on whether the residents felt safe, had good relationships with their neighbours, and were unworried about crime-rates in their local area. The study found that “Residents barely have any complaints about their neighbours, with only parking spaces being their biggest bug bear”.

It is a huge achievement for Plymouth to feature so highly on this list, and it is very reassuring that Plymouth residents are so happy. However, there is always room for improvement. Below are a series of tips that aim to help improve spirits even further.

The Great Outdoors

Living in Britain affords its residents with the opportunity to explore the most beautiful natural landscapes; however, not everyone knows that this can actually improve your levels of happiness. Therefore, it is essential that the residents of Plymouth get outside as much as possible. Try to seek out as many green spaces as possible, both in your local area and across the country. Whether it’s organising walking holidays or having a picnic in the local park, breathing in the fresh air will surely bring a smile to your face.

Exercise

Remember to set aside some time for exercise. It doesn’t have to be about losing weight or gaining tone. Exercise releases endorphins which will instantly give you a boost. Cycling instead of driving, or jogging instead of walking, could be enough to get you started. You could also look into joining an exercise class or a gym, as this will enable you to combine your social life with your efforts to look after your body.

Mind, body, and soul

One key element of happiness is relaxation. It is almost impossible to be happy if you are stressed. Not only will your days be filled with tension, but you may even experience side effects such as weight gain, insomnia, mood swings, and depression. Therefore, it is vitally important that you take some time out to restore your mental well-being. Visiting a massage therapist is a great way to do this. For instance, a Heaven and Earth massage, uses natural, scent-free vitoleum oils that are rich in vitamins and minerals to soften your skin and soothe your aching bones. The treatments are given in a relaxing setting, with gentle music that will take you away from any daily stresses.

Keep Busy

Boost your spirits by finding lots of exciting activities to do in your spare time. Instead of giving into the temptation of staying in and watching the telly, why not get out and about. In Plymouth, you could visit the UK’s biggest Marine Aquarium, go up in the big wheel, or explore Smeaton’s lighthouse. You could also drive a little further out and discover an area you’ve never been to before. The most important thing is to just keep looking for activities that will inject some fun into your life. It might also be an idea to keep a journal or a scrapbook, or for the tech-savvy set up an Instagram account. This will encourage you to seek out adventures that are worth documenting.
