Many gay rights groups have angrily criticised a decision by Plymouth City Council to allow “homophobic” Andy Wommack to speak at one of its venues.

Texan born Andy Wommack, who is due to appear at God TV’s summer celebration in the city, has been surrounded by controversy for the many statements he has made regarding homosexuality.

On his website Andy Wommack states that it is his belief that “homosexuality is wrong from a moral and social point of view”. Mr Wommack has also come forward as an open supporter for the creation and tightening of ‘anti-gay’ laws worldwide.

Organisers God TV have described the event as “not to be missed empowering teaching”. They also stated that the event is one of “love and compassion” and they understand “the need to exercise freedom of speech responsibly and lawfully”

Plymouth based LGBT group, Pride in Plymouth are not thought to be planning any active protests over the event at this time.
