A new study has revealed the UK’s best and worst road trips for electric vehicles as we get closer to the summer months.

As the government’s goal to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 draws nearer, the team at National Scrap Car sought to investigate the UK’s best road trips for electric cars.

Analysing the number of charging points available across each famous road trip, they also calculated how many times you’ll need to charge your car to complete your trip.

The best UK road trips for electric vehicles

  1. The Atlantic Highway - Bath to Land’s End

  2. The Cambrian Way - Cardiff to Conwy

  3. Norfolk Coast - Kings Lynn, along the Norfolk Coast

  4. Jurassic Coast - Bournemouth to Exmouth

  5. The Cotswolds - Gloucester, around the Cotswolds

  6. Lake District - Windermere to Ambleside

  7. Mourne Coastal Route - Belfast to Mourne Mountains

  8. Kintyre 66 - Tarbert to Torrisdale

  9. The Yorkshire Dales - Harrogate and around the Dales

  10. Nairn Circular - Circular drive from Inverness to Nairn

Covering a distance of around 255 miles, the Atlantic Highway ranked in first place with the largest number of electric vehicle chargers per kilometre than any other road trip in the UK.  With a pick of 90 chargers along this route, you’ll only need 0.94 charges to complete this 7-hour trip, meaning you can surf the waves in Newquay and enjoy an English tea in Bath without any charging stress.

If a mountainous route is more your cup of tea than the coast, then Wales’ Cambrian Way is the ideal route for you. Taking you along the mountainous spine of Wales from Cardiff to Llandudno, you have 65 EV chargers to choose from, but you’ll only need to charge your car 0.22 times across this 290-mile journey.

Unfortunately, if the Scottish Cairngorms are on your bank holiday bucket list, you may find difficulty navigating the route with an electric vehicle.

The Nairn Circular route covers 129 miles but only has 10 available chargers along the route.

Dorry Potter from National Scrap Car commented:  “The summer season is a great time to get away on a UK staycation which might involve a road trip. If you’re going on a road trip, our research will hopefully help when it comes to picking the best route for your electric vehicle.

“The increasing need for electric vehicle chargers in the UK is not surprising, given the growing demand for electric vehicles as a more sustainable mode of transportation. With more people switching to electric vehicles, the demand for charging infrastructure will only increase in the coming years.

“While there are currently more than 25,000 public charging points in the UK, this number will need to increase dramatically to meet the growing demand. The government has already committed to investing in developing a comprehensive charging network, but there is still much work to be done.”
