Theatre Royal Plymouth has released a new video explaining what patrons can expect from a relaxed performance at the theatre.

Relaxed performances are accessible to everyone and aim to reduce the stress that some of the sensory elements of a show can cause, by creating a more relaxing environment.

The theatre has several relaxed performances available over the festive period including for the pantomime Sleeping Beauty (on 12 January 2023) and Pinocchio (7 January 2023). These performances can be booked now via the TRP website

Relaxed performances usually include the following changes:

  • There is an informal atmosphere and patrons can enter and leave the auditorium throughout the show as doors are left open
  • The house lights will stay on
  • Strobe lighting is avoided
  • There will not be any loud bangs or loud music
  • A chill-out zone is available
  • Making noise during the show is not discouraged
  • There are additional staff on hand with Makaton training
  • There are an increased number of wheelchair spaces available

Megan Witt, Senior House Manager at Theatre Royal Plymouth, said: “These performances are a perfect opportunity for anyone with any anxieties about attending the theatre to come along. The traditional ‘theatre rules’ are relaxed, and the atmosphere is fun and informal while the magic of the show remains!”
