Ocean Ecology, one of the country’s leading marine ecological consultancies, has established a new specialist team in Plymouth following recent growth.

Ocean Ecology is one of the UK’s leading marine ecological specialists, providing a range of multidisciplinary marine survey, laboratory and advisory services for development projects in both the coastal and offshore zones, that feed into the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, as well as monitoring programmes, and applied research projects. Its expertise lies in the assessment and monitoring of benthic and epibenthic communities, protected habitats, fisheries and marine mammal populations and providing expert advice on the design and implementation of marine studies.

The consultancy, which includes over 40 marine biologists and technical personnel, has recently grown to welcome a new Data Solutions team at Plymouth Science Park. Headed-up by Paul Williams and Elliot Carter, the specialist team brings a wealth of experience in providing software, data and analytic solutions to the scientific and research sectors, and will work on the management of marine survey data.

The Plymouth team adds to Ocean Ecology’s growing UK-wide presence and provides an important local foothold in the South West.

Ross Griffin, Technical Director at Ocean Ecology, said: ‘Successfully managing the increasing volume of data that we collect in the field and generate in our laboratory is fundamental to meeting the ever-changing needs of our clients. We’re therefore thrilled that Paul and Elliot will be heading up our new Data Solutions team at Plymouth Science Park, and look forward to seeing how we can work collaboratively with the cluster of innovative businesses based at the site.

‘Plymouth is well known as a global centre of excellence for marine science and technology, so having a presence at the Park will mean we’ll be ideally placed to collaborate with other leading marine scientific organisations on projects in the South West and beyond.’

Elliot Carter, Senior Data Engineer at Ocean Ecology, said: ‘The growth of the Data Solutions team along with Ocean Ecology’s continued growth begins a very exciting time for us. The additional resources we now have mean we can develop our existing tools like ABACUS even further, and develop new innovative data solutions in marine and aquaculture sectors.’

Fay Davies, Business Development Manager at Plymouth Science Park, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Ocean Ecology’s new Data Solutions team to the Park. Plymouth is the perfect place for the company to expand, and we look forward to helping Ocean Ecology make the most of the city’s historic and world-leading legacy of marine science and research.’
