Spring is an optimistic time of year. The worst of the cold weather is behind us for another year; the frost has thawed, flowers have started to blossom, and trees have begun to take on a healthier shade of green again. It’s a great time of year to head out on a break – whether it’s a short city experience or a more active walking holiday.

But exactly where are the best destinations for tourists looking to take advantage of what the season has to offer? There are a few places that come into their own at this time of year, whether because of their natural qualities, or because of specific festivals and other landmark occasions.

Plus, Spring also tends to represent value for money, as most tourists tend to book their holidays to coincide with warm weather. Let’s consider a few leading candidates for tourist destinations at this time of year.

The Netherlands

Spring in the Netherlands is all about Tulips. You’ll see them blossoming en masse throughout the country, but undoubtedly the epicentre of the action is to be found at Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam. You’ll find the famous flowers in every colour and shape you can think of. The best time to head out there is usually April.

Funchal, Madeira

The largest city on this famous Portuguese island is a favourite for tourists. Whether you want to go for a dolphin-spotting trip, or you just want to luxuriate by the pool for a few nights, it’s a city with plenty to offer during Springtime. There’s even a flower festival, capped by a special parade, running throughout May. So, if you want to avoid the summer crowds, it’s an ideal time to make the trip.

Mount Fuji, Japan

During springtime, Japan’s famously pink cherry blossom trees are at their most vibrant and colourful. Across the country, picnics are laid out under the shade of the famous blossoms – but you’ll get the best experience if you venture close to Mount Fuji, where the trees are plentiful and the scenery is spectacular.

Holidaying in Japan tends to be too expensive to do regularly, and thus you’ll want to get the most from every trip you take.

The Cotswolds, UK

If you fancy a springtime experience that’s a little closer to home, then you need look no further than the Cotswolds. Sprawling countryside, picturesque little villages, and networks of canals, it’s a part of the country with plenty of appeal. It’s just warm enough at this time of year that you can indulge in a long trek along the area’s bridleways and footpaths. It’s rather flatter than many of the country’s famous walking-holiday locations, and there are plenty of world-class pubs and tearooms ripe for visiting.
