Alison Seabeck MP is looking for members of the public to sign up to attend a Dementia Friends information session on Tuesday 15 April 2014.

The one-hour session, that will take place in Plymouth University at 2pm, is part of Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends programme, an initiative launched in February 2013 to help members of the public understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action. Alzheimer’s Society is aiming to have one million Dementia Friends by 2015, to help make England more dementia friendly and improve the lives of the 670,000 people currently living with the condition.

A Dementia Friends Champion volunteer will be delivering the Dementia Friends session in Plymouth.

The session will last an hour and gives people information about the personal impact of dementia, and what they can do to help. The link for the session is as follows http://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/session/6650. Please register as soon as possible as places are limited,  the deadline is Friday 11 April.

Alison Seabeck MP said: “I have sat in on one of these courses and it was a real eye opener and made me reassess the way I related to those suffering from dementia and their families.

"We need to be able to talk about dementia in our communities and better support those affected by it, in its many forms.  I hope people will want to come along to learn more and support Plymouth as it works to become Britain’s first dementia friendly city.”

Camilla Alfred, Dementia Friends Regional Support Officer at Alzheimer’s Society said:  "Less than half of us think we know enough about dementia. Dementia Friends is the perfect opportunity to be able to invite everyone up and down the country to improve their knowledge.

"Dementia Friends isn’t about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend."

Join the session today and help make our community dementia friendly.
