Plymouth City Council’s library service is supporting the nationwide Blue September health campaign, which aims to raise awareness of male cancers.

Men in the UK are 40 per cent more likely to die from any cancer than women. Every year 80,000 men in the UK die from cancer but many cases could be prevented by adopting healthier lifestyles and through early detection.

To help get the message out there and support Blue September, the library service is hosting two special events in partnership with Plymouth Community Healthcare’s Livewell team.

The Livewell team will be on hand to offer advice and information about how men can reduce their risk of developing cancer, as well as spot the early signs. They will have information on a range of support services to help men lead a healthy lifestyle, including support with stopping smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and becoming more active.

The team will be at the Central Library from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 23 September and at Devonport Library from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 24 September. Anyone who isn’t yet a library member can join for free on the day.

Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Blue September is a great opportunity to remind people about the signs and symptoms of cancer and the things people can do to reduce their risk of developing certain types of cancer.

“Men are less likely to go to the doctor particularly if they are embarrassed, so initiatives like this we hope to encourage more people to come forward earlier on. You should speak to your GP in the first instance if you have any concerns.”

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith added: “Our libraries have books and resources on a wide range of health, wellbeing and social care issues and services. Staff can help you access lots of useful information online, as well as access community services.”
