Data released today has revealed a huge 71% increase in sales of beer this January compared to 2019 - suggesting that despite the popularity of Dry January, not all Brits are kicking off their year by cutting out alcohol entirely.

The data released today by e-commerce platform, Wowcher, revealed the staggering year-on-year increase in beer sales since the beginning of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Whilst beer sales surged, wine sales have decreased by 55% - suggesting that consumers are opting for moderation with lower alcohol options, rather than cutting out alcohol entirely.

This trend may be less of a surprise given that new research suggests that the benefits of going cold-turkey may be exaggerated, and that drinking in moderation may be beneficial in the long run.

Alexis Harrison, Head of Marketing at Wowcher, comments: “Whilst many Brits may be focused on ditching alcohol as part of a new year health kick after festive indulgence, it’s evident that many are preferring to drink in moderation instead. Our data shows that whilst Dry January has certainly affected the way that Brits drink, it’s not for everyone; there are lots of other ways to see in the new year.”
