A Plymouth children’s centre has organised an event to help families in Deer Park, Efford, Lipson and Laira get to grips with the welfare reform changes during the half-term holiday.

The event is taking place at the DELL Children’s Centre based at High View Primary School in Torridge Way on Tuesday 29 October from 11am to 1pm and will include a free lunch for families courtesy of Sainsbury’s.

It aims to attract local families, particularly those with children under the age of five, to explain what welfare reform changes mean for them and offer practical advice about ways to save money and make the most of free activities on offer in the city.

Parents will be able to get help and support to find work or access training. There will also be information about feeding a family on a budget.

The event is being supported by local organisations, who will be there on the day with stalls and staff offering information and advice, including: Working Links, Barclays bank, Barnardos Works (Twin), the Plymouth Adult and Community Learning Service, the Council’s Library service and City Of Plymouth Credit union.

But it won’t be all work and no play – there will be a magician and balloon modelling and the Drake’s Den play bus will be on-site to keep children entertained.

Sharon Holloway, Deputy Manager for DELL Children’s Centre, said: “We’ve got some great activities for children, as well as excellent information for parents about the welfare reform changes. By combining family fun with some serious issues around household incomes and benefits information, we’re hoping to attract a really good crowd. Thanks to all those involved for helping us to organise this really worthwhile day.”
