Final fortnight for Museum exhibition of 20th century greats

A high profile art exhibition featuring works on paper by four of the 20th century’s greatest artists has only two weeks left to run at the City Museum and Art Gallery.

‘Modern Masters in Print: Matisse, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol‘ is on a national tour from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A).

Drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collections of prints, posters and artists’ books, the exhibition highlights the different ways that Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol used printmaking to express themselves and develop their artistic practice.

The exhibition has received really positive feedback since it opened in late May with visitor comments including ‘excellent’, ‘well presented’, ‘so good I will go back again’ and ‘eye opening’.

The exhibition includes well-known prints of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy by Warhol, examples of fine art prints and surrealist railway posters by Dalí, the first print produced by Picasso as well as another produced by him at the ripe old age of 76 and a series of beautiful black and white prints by Matisse that demonstrate his career-long obsession with the female form.

All four artists were accomplished printmakers who used the medium to reach a wider audience. Their work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art.

Modern Masters in Print: Matisse, Picasso, Dali and Warhol will run at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery until Saturday 23 August.

Exhibition opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Admission is free.
