Around 100 tickets have already been sold for an ‘Evening with Jenny Agutter’ in Tavistock with event organisers urging people to get their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

The star of BBC series Call the Midwife and The Railway Children is due to visit Tavistock on 25th October for a special screening of her film, The Riddle of the Sands.

The Taunton-born actress who has a home on the Lizard in Cornwall has been a patron of children’s charity CHICKS, who will be benefitting from the event, for many years.

She said: ‘‘I haven’t seen the film in 15 years so I am really looking forward to seeing it again…The whole film was very interesting to do and I worked with Michael York before in ‘Logan’s Run’ and afterwards in ‘September’ so we got to know each other quite well.

I really hope people enjoy seeing the film in Tavistock and we raise lots of money for CHICKS. It should be a great evening!’’

Following the screening, Ms Agutter will be taking part in a question and answer session with the audience alongside the film’s producer, Drummond Challis.

Mr Challis said: ‘‘I am delighted to be able to bring this classic film and its leading lady to Tavistock for a unique screening.

‘‘The Riddle of the Sands is a wonderful story of loyalty, patriotism and espionage and is particularly poignant at this time with the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1. The novel on which the film is based by Erskine Childers had, in Churchill’s words, a significant contribution to the eventual outcome.

‘‘I’ve given lectures about this film across the country so to be able to show it in my home town in the company of this renowned actress is a unique experience.

‘‘We’ve been really pleased with ticket sales to date. With only a couple of weeks to go before the event, I recommend that any fans of Jenny Agutter or the film get their tickets very soon to avoid disappointment.’’

Tickets cost £10.50 and are available at Bookstop in Tavistock or by calling 01822 811020. Doors open at 7pm with the film starting at 7:30pm at Tavistock College.

All proceeds will go to CHICKS children’s charity and St Paul’s Church Gulworthy. CHICKS provides free respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK.
