Six of the UK’s best pyrotechnics companies are busy preparing for an explosive showdown with less than a month to go before the British Firework Championships returns to Plymouth Hoe.

Visitors from all over the world will be coming to see the skies light up above Plymouth’s spectacular waterfront on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 August.

Hosted by The Event Services Association (TESA) and Plymouth City Council in association with The Herald and the University of St Mark & St John, the Championships celebrate their 18th anniversary this year and are one of the biggest annual displays put on by professional firework companies anywhere in the UK.

Tens of thousands of Plymouth residents and holiday makers will head to the Hoe for two evenings of family entertainment, each culminating in three spectacular fireworks displays. More than four tonnes of fireworks will light up the skies as the country’s top pyrotechnics companies battle it out to be named the British Fireworks Champion 2014.

Shellscape from Maidenhead in Berkshire will open the competition on the Tuesday, followed by Blitz Fireworks from Crewe in Cheshire and Northern Lights Fireworks from Trowbridge in Wiltshire.
The competition will continue on the Wednesday with PYRO 1from Hatfield in Hertfordshire, followed by Reaction Fireworks from Stanley in County Durham. MLE Pyrotechnics from Daventry in Northants will close the competition with the finale performance.

Entertainment will be starting from 6.30pm each evening, courtesy of Heart Radio. There will also be fairground rides and refreshment stalls and the first firework displays will start at around 9.30pm each evening as dusk falls.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “The British Firework Championships is back and each year it seems to get better and better. Thousands of people enjoy this event and visitors come to Plymouth for a holiday specifically to see the fireworks.

“Plymouth Hoe is a perfect setting for this and everyone is guaranteed a great evening out. If you haven’t been to one of these firework shows before, this one is not to be missed.”
