Just before the start of summer holidays and their move up from primary school into secondary education, more than two thousand ten and eleven year olds from across Plymouth are learning vital life skills that will help keep them safe and potentially save lives.

The event is organised by Plymouth City Learning and Communities Department, hosted by the Royal Navy is run over a three week period from the 8 until the 26 June.

Junior Life Skills 2015 promotes personal and community safety through practical and interactive demonstrations and activities including: how to respond to an oil pan fire; what can happen if you trespass on the railway; how to stay safe in the sea and on the beach; road safety and how to travel safely on public transport; how to provide first aid; safe and appropriate use of the internet and social media; fire risks in the home and electrical safety in the home and community.

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “What better way to drive home our safety messages than to get children out of the class room to experience some breath taking and heart-thumping safety displays? The Life Skills annual safety event is aimed at reducing casualty rates and providing children with the life skills necessary to stay safe as their curiosity and need for independence grows. This is a fantastic event for Plymouth’s children and I’m delighted to see so many of our key partners joining together to recognise the importance of helping to keep children safe.”

Organisations donating their time and expertise this year include: Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police, PCC road safety team, Western Power, Office of Rail Regulations, The Peninsula Medical School, RNLI, Devon and Cornwall Police ,Plymouth City Bus and PCC Learning and Communities department.
