With just days to go before the entry deadline, the final judge has been announced for World Extreme Medicine’s inaugural photo competition.

Dr Shawna Pandya joins World Extreme Medicine founder Mark Hannaford and master photographer Perou on the judging panel to choose the image that best portrays the competition theme ‘Extreme is Everywhere’.

Dr Pandya is a physician, speaker, martial artist, and citizen-scientist astronaut candidate. A licensed GP, she holds degrees in Honors Neuroscience (BSc. Hons, University of Alberta), Space Studies (MSc., International Space University) and medicine (MD, University of Alberta).

In 2021 she was granted an Honorary Fellowship in Extreme and Wilderness Medicine by World Extreme Medicine, and in 2022 was named by the Explorers’ Club as one of “50 Explorers Changing the World” - an accolade she shares with fellow judge Mark.

So far an impressive number of entries have been received from medical professionals from various disciplines, showing a wide range of interpretations of the ‘extreme’ theme from exotic overseas locations to family holidays.

With a closing date of September 30 at midnight, there’s still time to enter. The winner and runners-up will be announced in mid-October. The top prize is either full in-person or digital access to World Extreme Medicine’s annual conference in Edinburgh, which runs from 19 - 21 November and offers over 60 hours of speaker content on themes such as expedition and wilderness, humanitarian and disaster, and space and aeronautical. Two runners-up will receive WEM goody bags with branded content such as dry bags, travel cups, lanyards and t-shirts.

The winning photos, plus the best of the rest, will be on display at the conference.

The competition is open to all medical professionals in the UK. For full details of how to enter and T&Cs CLICK HERE
