Plymouth charity Promoting Children in Plymouth (PCiP) has received a £2,500 donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, helping them reach around 1,000 local children with vital literacy programmes over the next year.

The funding will support PCiP’s Community Story Telling and Book Gifting projects — initiatives aimed at encouraging a love of reading from an early age and helping tackle the deep-rooted impacts of child poverty in the city.

The donation was made after Deborah Cunningham, a customer consultant at Yorkshire Building Society’s Plymouth branch, nominated the charity for support from the Foundation.

“We’re proud to support Promoting Children in Plymouth with this donation,” Deborah said. “They provide an incredibly important service in the city, and the work they do in the fight against child poverty is invaluable.”

PCiP’s mission is to eradicate the social injustice, ill health and hardship caused by child poverty in Plymouth. Their work focuses on boosting inspiration, ambition and education – giving young people the tools and confidence to shape their futures.

“We’re really thankful to Deborah and the Charitable Foundation,” said Kerry Bidewell, Development Manager at PCiP. “Being able to read securely is the biggest single indicator of a child’s future outcomes. This donation allows us to continue to engage and inspire a generation of future readers.”

The Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is funded by the Small Change Big Difference® scheme, where customers donate pennies from the annual interest on their accounts. Since 1999, the Foundation has donated over £10 million to local charities across the UK.
